The Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Party Central Committee reaffirmed the Marxist ideological line. It stressed the importance of grasping the scientific system of Mao Zedong Thought completely and accurately. It called on the people to emancipate their minds, seek truth from facts and look forward with unity. Deng Xiaoping is shown here speaking at the session.
 

During the process of correcting the wrongdoings of the past, some people attempted to negate the leadership of the Communist Party and the socialist system. At a meeting to discuss theoretical work on March 30, 1979, Deng Xiaoping emphasized the importance of the Four Cardinal Principles of adhering to the socialist road, the people’s democratic dictatorship, the leadership of the Communist Party and Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought.
 

At Party national congress held in Beijing in September 1985, Deng Xiaoping called on the Party to resolutely push forward the reform. He asked the people to discover and resolve timely problems that might arise, and stressed the importance of promoting an advanced culture and ideology. At the same meeting, Chen Yuan pointed out that the socialist economy is a planned economy. On June 9, 1989, Deng Xiaoping, chairman of the Central Military Commission, met with cadres of army-commander level and above from the martial law enforcement troops in the capital.
 

In August 1981, when meeting in Beijing with Fu Chaoshu, president of the Hong Kong-based Central Daily News, Deng Xiaoping expounded the concept of “one country, two systems” as the basic principle for the reunification of the motherland.

On March 4, 1985, when meeting with a delegation from the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Deng Xiaoping pointed out that there are two strategic issues of global significance in the present world. One is the question of peace, namely the question of East-West relations; the other is the economic question, or the question of development, namely the question of North-South relations. Of the two, the question of the North-South relations is the key question.

On January 1, 1979, China and the United States formally established diplomatic relations. At the invitation of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Deng Xiaoping paid an official friendly visit to the United States.
